A systematic approach
Integrations are usually handled as part of the replacement or delivery project and are included in the overall project plan. Sometimes, especially for existing customers, a complex integration can be a project on its own. However, in all these cases, at UniqCast we handle integrations in a controlled and systematic way, making sure that at the end everything is delivered as planned and with minimal end-user interruptions.
From my experience, I would say that you can’t successfully deliver a complex integration in a Telco environment without proper planning and design, careful risk assessment, and professional execution.
Collaboration is Key
First activity on all our projects is always a kick-off meeting with the customer, where project teams get to know each other and, most importantly, align on project scope, goals and expectations. It is important to list all required integrations and potential risks at this stage.
The Integration Plan
The kick-off meeting is followed by a series of workshops where the current state is analyzed in detail and all integrations are discussed and defined in detail. These include existing UI and user workflows, CRM and provisioning, BI systems, existing monitoring systems, subscriber migration procedures and any other required integration. An important step is defining a detailed solution design document that provides a rack layout, connectivity and IP networking plan, channel list, configuration details for each system, system and solution architecture and all the integration points. In addition, as a result of all the workshops, a series of integration and migration documents are prepared that define each integration in detail, as well as major activities that need to be done from both sides. These are all the activities required by Telco to deliver new services to end users, such as publishing the new apps, internal testing and approvals, training for the call center, support teams, etc., announcing new services, preparing instructions for end users, and similar.
Subscriber Migration
In replacement projects, crucial integration is the migration of the subscribers to the new platform. Here we define the procedures on how to migrate user data to the new platform and how to deliver or upgrade client applications to achieve seamless migration. CRM data migration can be achieved through two main approaches: API access for supported systems or the development of custom scripts and procedures tailored to the specific data extraction and ingestion usage of the existing system.
From our experience, defining detailed solution design and other integration documents in the preparation phase of the project, guarantees quicker implementation time, decreases the risk of failure, and avoids misunderstandings in the implementation phase.
Rigorous Testing for a Flawless User Experience
After integrations are developed, it is important to properly test it and make sure that there will be no regressions or any other negative impact on the users. We have several stages of testing that include development testing in our environment. After that, integration teams test all the required scenarios on the test platform, which is similar to the production one. At the end, we test everything together with the customer on the production platform. It is important not only to perform the functional tests, but also to simulate full migration procedures on the backend and on the client apps and do the performance and fail-over testing to guarantee smooth migration.
